Advancing Device Connectivity: How the Argonaut Project is Powering FHIR-First Interoperability
July 15, 2025 | Webinar
Join us for a deep dive into the Argonaut Project and how it’s advancing medical device interoperability through FHIR-based APIs. HIMSS Physician Committee member, Harm Scherpbier, MD, MS, FHIMSS, FAMIA, will lead an informative discussion with Josh Mandel, MD, Chief Architect for Health at Microsoft Research, and a key figure on the Argonaut Project. Attendees will learn what makes Argonaut's approach unique, how it enhances standard FHIR capabilities, and why it’s critical for improving the way devices, like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), share data with electronic health records. We’ll explore how this data flows into the EHR, what it looks like, and how it benefits both patients and providers through more timely, actionable insights.
The session will also discuss how Argonaut’s work with CGMs can scale to support a wide range of connected devices—from smart stethoscopes and portable ultrasounds to wearables like Holter monitors. Dr. Mandel will discuss what’s next for Argonaut’s device connection modules and what health systems can do to help bring these technologies into everyday clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
During this session, we will:
- Explain the purpose and scope of the Argonaut Project, including how it enhances FHIR standards to support seamless medical device integration.
- Describe how continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data is transmitted into electronic health records (EHRs) using Argonaut APIs, and identify the clinical benefits for patients and providers.
- Assess the generalizability of the Argonaut device connection model to other medical devices, such as smart stethoscopes, portable ultrasounds, and wearables.
- Identify key steps that health systems and technology leaders can take to adopt and scale Argonaut-enabled device interoperability in clinical practice.
