Cybersecurity in healthcare involves protecting electronic information and assets from unauthorized access, use and disclosure. It has three goals: protecting information confidentiality, integrity and availability―also known as the “CIA triad.” Robust cybersecurity is required for continuity of care, healthcare operations, and patient safety.

Committee members are select HIMSS members representing health system, provider, vendor, academic and consulting experts around the globe. They work with fellow experts to develop and deploy tools and resources for the healthcare ecosystem.

Applicants are selected during the annual Call for HIMSS Committee Volunteers. Positions are available on a two-year rotation for HIMSS members in good standing. Learn more about our eligibility and application deadlines.

The HIMSS Cybersecurity Guide provides insights into how cybersecurity is essential for healthcare organizations, along with resources that explore common cybersecurity issues.

Privacy and Security Awareness Initiatives

HIMSS joins the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to help raise awareness of the importance of online privacy and security. To help achieve this goal, HIMSS champions two NCSA efforts―National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and Data Privacy Day―and produces educational resources throughout the year to help users stay safe online.

In honor of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the HIMSS Cybersecurity and Privacy and Security Committee has developed a valuable Tip Sheet, Cybersecurity in Healthcare: A Critical Concern, to highlight the critical importance of cybersecurity in the healthcare and public health sector. This resource addresses the unique challenges faced by healthcare organizations, including the high value of their data, the extensive use of connected devices, and the complex data exchanges necessary for patient care, coordination, and administrative functions. This tip sheet was created to help healthcare organizations navigate these challenges effectively.
