Ankara Bilkent Şehir Hastanesi Recognized for Digital Maturity with HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 Validation

HIMSS has validated Ankara Bilkent Şehir Hastanesi - Fizik Tedavi ve Rehabilitasyon Hastanesi at Stage 6 of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model, recognizing the hospital’s significant progress in advancing digital health transformation and patient-centered care in Europe.

As the pioneering team behind the digitalisation efforts of the largest hospital in Europe, the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital tower at Ankara City Hospital has played a leading role in establishing digital workflows and demonstrating the value of technology-enabled care across the broader hospital campus.

The hospital’s EMRAM Stage 6 achievement reflects a broad range of digital advancements designed to improve patient safety, clinical quality and operational efficiency. Key initiatives included implementing fully electronic medication ordering and verification workflows, deploying bedside medication administration verification processes, digitalising patient documentation and structured forms, and enhancing clinical decision support capabilities to support care delivery.

To support adoption across the organization, continuous staff training and governance processes were established, with employee feedback incorporated into ongoing system improvements through dedicated change and governance committees.

“In 2024, digital hospital studies gained momentum at the Physical Therapy Hospital, and the goal was to validate the EMRAM 6 level and prepare for EMRAM level 7,” said Dr. Sinan Korukluoğlu, Deputy Chief Physician at Ankara Bilkent Şehir Hastanesi. “Based on EMRAM guidelines, it was aimed to carry out all processes with computer aid, to ensure patient safety with digital methods, and to increase the quality of care by directing the processes carried out by employees with clinical decision support systems.”

The organization’s digital transformation efforts continued despite major operational challenges over recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 earthquake response in Türkiye, which temporarily shifted focus toward emergency and disaster care services.

“HIMSS was impressed by the dedication and preparation the team brought to this assessment. This organisation demonstrates both remarkable scale and a strong commitment to excellence,” said Bansi Shah, a HIMSS Digital Health Strategist.

The EMRAM Stage 6 validation reinforces the hospital’s commitment to leveraging digital health technologies to strengthen patient safety, improve clinical workflows, and support high-quality care delivery as it continues its journey toward Stage 7 digital maturity.
