HIMSS Advocates for Congress to Support Telehealth Access for Tribal Communities Act

HIMSS has launched an advocacy campaign calling for the U.S House of Representatives to support the Telehealth Access for Tribal Communities Act of 2025.

The bill, which Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez introduced in April, would allow audio-only telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries, and it is vital for Tribal Communities seeking access to high quality healthcare, especially if broadband capacity is limited.

Through the HIMSS Native American & Indigenous Community events and roundtables, many discussions have centered around the critical role of technology and connectivity in alleviating health disparities for Tribal Communities.

Robert Coffey, HIMSS Native American & Indigenous Community Chair, said Indian Country needs the Telehealth for Tribal Communities Act.

“This legislation will continue to support those healthcare facilities that are located in rural areas and where patients may not have dependable transportation to these facilities,” Coffey said. “Telehealth has proven to be a useful technology tool for providers to deliver quality healthcare services to tribal citizens that live in remote areas of Indian Country. HIMSS Native American and Indigenous Community fully supports this legislation.”
