HIMSS Announces New Test Plan for Immunization Integration Program

HIMSS and the American Immunization Registry Association, in collaboration with the Drummond Group, is excited to announce the launch of the latest test plan for the Immunization Integration Program. This new plan is a significant advancement for developers of health information technology and electronic health records systems, aimed at improving interoperability and data quality in immunization information systems.

Key highlights of the new test plan:

  • Comprehensive Test Development Process: The IIP team has meticulously reviewed previous test plans and incorporated essential elements and feedback from the IIP Executive Council. This new version has been reorganized to ensure a robust and consistent approach to testing, enhancing the overall reliability of immunization data integration.
  • Enhanced Capabilities: The updated test plan includes eight core capabilities designed to streamline workflow and ensure comprehensive testing:
    • Test Preparation – Data Load and Public Health Configuration
    • Care Provision and Documentation
    • Query, Response, and Reconciliation
    • Transmission and Acknowledgment
    • Patient Access
    • Clinical Configuration
    • Transport
    • Data Quality
  • Collaboration with NIST: Coordination with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) allows for the Immunization Integration Test Suite to assess whether EHRs conform to current standards and prepare for ONC Certified EHR Technology (CEHRT) 2015 requirements.
  • Focus on Data Quality: New functional requirements have been introduced to address critical data quality checks, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of immunization records. This includes preventing errors in critical date entries, such as patient birth dates and vaccine administration dates.

The IIP aims to enhance the interoperability and functionality of immunization data within health information systems. Supported by an Executive Council of leaders from key partner groups, the IIP continuously evolves to meet the needs of the healthcare community and improve public health outcomes.
