HIMSS Veterans Community Military Spouse Spotlight: Melissa Sanchez, M.S.
Leading Through Service and Impact
Melissa Sanchez is a healthcare and membership leader whose career spans oncology, enterprise development, change management, and health technology. As the proud spouse of a Marine Corps veteran, her personal and professional journey has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, service, and commitment to creating opportunities for others. During her husband’s combat deployment to Iraq, Melissa managed their home, raised their two young sons, worked full-time, and earned her master’s degree, all while living off base in a civilian community without immediate access to installation resources; she had to build her own support system from the ground up. Navigating that chapter forged an unshakable resilience, taught her to stay grounded under pressure, and instilled a lifelong respect for the service members and families whose sacrifices often go unseen.
Melissa began her career in oncology account management with Cancer Treatment Centers of America, where she developed an appreciation for the connection between operational excellence and patient care. She later expanded her expertise through enterprise development and change management roles, helping organizations and diverse teams align strategic initiatives. At HIMSS, she applied that experience to healthcare technology through membership engagement, retention initiatives, specialized networks, and community development.
Melissa leads with a mission-driven, collaborative, and people-centered approach, bringing people together around a shared purpose and turning ideas into practical programs with measurable impact. Her experience as a military spouse taught her to remain calm under pressure, navigate constant change, and build solutions when resources and support were not readily available. Those experiences continue to shape how she advocates for others and creates opportunities for people to succeed. Her impact extends beyond membership growth, helping build meaningful bridges between military-connected professionals and the civilian healthcare and technology sectors by connecting veterans and spouses with resources, credentials, professional networks, and visibility that can accelerate their careers. Melissa believes that the resilience, discipline, adaptability, and problem-solving developed through military life are valuable professional assets and is committed to ensuring those strengths are recognized and put to work.
During her time at HIMSS, one of Melissa’s most significant leadership accomplishments was spearheading the relaunch of the HIMSS Veterans Community and growing it into an active network of nearly 1,000 members. Her work focused on creating tangible pathways for veterans and military spouses to enter and advance within health technology. Through initiatives such as the Hero’s Welcome program, certification scholarships, peer-to-peer connections, and the Veteran Health Changemaker Award, Melissa helped transform the community from a concept into a platform for professional connection, recognition, and career advancement.
Today, serving as the Membership Assistant Manager at the Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC), everything has come full circle. Melissa has the privilege of pairing her membership engagement background with her dedication to oncology, supporting multidisciplinary cancer care teams across the country.
Melissa’s vision is simple: military-connected professionals should not have to navigate their next chapter alone. She is committed to building the partnerships, pathways, and connections that turn military experience into opportunity and help more veterans and military spouses become leaders in healthcare and health technology. Her message to the industry is clear: the talent is already here. We just need to open the doors and create the opportunities for them to lead.
