HIMSS: From your perspective, what does successful digital transformation look like in a clinical setting, and how should physicians define “measurable impact”?
Dr. Morgan: This can be difficult as most institutions focus more on ROI/Revenue stream to measure the success of an intervention. From a clinician's perspective, they often look to less quantifiable items such as ease of use, decreased documentation time, better access to clinical data, etc. Also, I think looking to see if there are any improvements in satisfaction from the patient perspective is also important.
HIMSS: How can physicians play a more strategic role in shaping technology decisions at the organizational or policy level?
Dr. Morgan: I feel that clinicians absolutely should have a seat at the table in not only the planning and deployment phases but also the design phase. We should insist on a “seat at the table.”
HIMSS: What capabilities or competencies will physicians need to lead in an increasingly AI-enabled healthcare environment?
Dr. Morgan: Probably the gold standard would be formal Clinical Informatics training and certification, but having some experience in change management would be an important skill for physicians.
HIMSS: What does responsible AI adoption look like from the front lines of care delivery?
Dr. Morgan: I would say to ensure that the technology is viewed as an assistant rather than a replacement and to assess the needs of your patients.
