HIMSS Physician Member Spotlight: Dr. Toyin Falola
The HIMSS Physician Member Spotlight is Back!
We’re excited to relaunch our monthly series highlighting HIMSS Physician Members who are driving meaningful change across healthcare.
Our June 2025 spotlight features Dr. Toyin Falola, a dedicated leader who began her career in community-based patient care and healthcare leadership in Northern California. After witnessing the persistent challenges of clinician burnout, limited patient access, and strained care delivery systems, Dr. Falola made a strategic shift into health technology. Today, she serves as the AVP of Clinical Product Strategy for Providence’s Virtual Care and Digital Health Organization.
When Dr. Falola speaks about health IT, her passion and expertise are unmistakable. In her HIMSS Physician Committee application, she emphasized the importance of inclusive and responsible advancement in technology. She stated:
“Moreover, we must utilize a diverse group of stakeholders and ensure that these technologies do not exacerbate existing health equities. Physicians must be aware of these technologies and take an active role in their development, evaluation, and implementation. It is key to being a part of the future of medicine and also to be part of the change to improve our health care system for ourselves and our patients.”
Learn more about Dr. Falola through her responses in the mini-interview below.
HIMSS: What excites you most about the future of digital health and its impact on patient care?
Falola: The future of digital health is exhilarating due to its potential to enhance patient outcomes and revitalize the joy of practicing medicine for clinicians. The diverse applications of technology can improve patient access and reduce clinician burnout, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective care.
HIMSS: Are there any digital health innovations or trends you think physicians should be paying closer attention to?
Falola: Physicians should focus on advancements in AI, especially its applications in diagnostics, disease prevention, precision medicine, clinical decision support, workflow automation, and documentation among a myriad of potential use spaces. AI has the potential to transform patient care and improve clinical workflows.
HIMSS: What barriers have you encountered when implementing new technologies in clinical settings, and how have you overcome them?
Falola: Barriers include issues of fairness and equity, deploy ability, workflow integration, clinical utility, ongoing maintenance, and ensuring enterprise ROI. Thus, implementation requires close collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, early involvement of clinical and operational teams, focus on end-user needs and use cases, stakeholder sponsorship and buy-in, and alignment with system-wide strategic priorities.
HIMSS: In your view, what does meaningful physician engagement in health tech development look like?
Falola: Meaningful engagement involves active participation in the design and implementation of health tech solutions, providing feedback, and championing technologies that meet real clinical needs and enhance patient care.
