HIMSS25 Europe Tackles the Healthcare Workforce Crisis
The 2025 HIMSS European Conference and Exhibition will take on one of the most urgent issues facing healthcare systems: the workforce crisis. Recruiting new talent while retaining the current workforce has become a critical component in digital health transformation. HIMSS25 Europe will dedicate an entire programming track to the future of the healthcare workforce.
Registration is open for HIMSS25 Europe, slated for 10-12 June in Paris. This year’s compelling programming and themes will bring together thought leaders, innovators and policymakers to explore sustainable, human-centered approaches to healthcare staffing, retention and education.
Tech and the Workforce, a session focused on how technology is transforming the healthcare labor landscape, will discuss the potential downsides of technology and what can improve the user experience in the rising digitalization of health care settings. Speakers include Dr. Derya Sahin of The World Bank, Jean-François Goglin of Connective Santé, Dr. Arnaud Hansske from the Catholic Institute Hospital Group of Lille and Elsa Creach of the French Digital Health Agency (ANS). Together, they will present actionable insights into digital readiness and the approaches for faster innovation development and lower bureaucratic burden on the workforce.
With growing burnout and clinicians seeking alternative career paths, Improving Workforce Satisfaction tackles the pressing issue of retention head-on. This session will spotlight the systemic challenges that are pushing medical professionals away from frontline roles and explore innovative policy solutions that countries are implementing to retain talent within public health systems. Attendees will gain perspective on the complexities of the workforce shortage, from training bottlenecks to burnout, and learn how to support clinicians in reimagining their roles without leaving the healthcare field.
Moderated by Dr. Daniel Beirão of Hospital da Luz in Portugal, the session Keeping Public Systems Alive brings together an expert panel to examine the key factors driving clinician attrition and explore strategic interventions. Panelists Sissel Hegdahl Oversand of Oslo University Hospital and Urška Bux of EIT Health will provide European viewpoints on workforce resilience, health system sustainability and the critical role of leadership in adapting to growing public health needs.
Concluding the track is the session It’s (Not) That Hard: Upskilling, a forward-looking session on the necessity of digital and AI literacy in the modern healthcare workforce. AI expert Mathilde Dumont will provide a French perspective on scalable upskilling strategies, while Dr. Dimitri Varsamis and Katie Webb from Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will share their UK-based approaches to embedding digital competencies in frontline teams and how it relates to the patient experience.
The Future of Workforce track will offer a timely and essential forum for tackling the most pressing workforce challenges in healthcare through expert-led sessions and collaborative discussions.
