Learn to Use Health Data Right at HIMSS25 Europe

At the 2025 HIMSS European Conference and Exhibition, taking place 10–12 June at the Palais des Congrès de Paris, the programming track Using Health Data Right will explore how health data, when ethically managed and applied, can serve as a powerful driver of digital transformation in healthcare.

Registration is open for HIMSS25 Europe, where leading voices in policy, research, innovation and patient advocacy will come together to examine the responsible use of data from multiple perspectives.

The program will start with the Hungry for Impact: Population Insights session that will explore the ethical implications of big data in healthcare, with a focus on how secondary data use can support more equitable systems. Dr. Jessica Morley, Postdoctoral Research Associate at Yale University’s Digital Ethics Center, will examine the risks of bias and misuse in healthcare AI. A panel discussion moderated by Professor Rachel Dunscombe, CEO of openEHR International, will dive into the challenges and opportunities of secondary data use in line with EHDS policies. The panel will include Dr Katharina Schneider, Head of the Data Access and Coordination Office at BfArM; Aymeric Perchant, National Coordinator of the Digital Health Acceleration Strategy at the French Ministry of Labour, Health and Solidarity; Markus Kalliola, Program Director at Sitra; and Professor Fidelia Cascini, Digital Health Expert at the Italian Ministry of Health.

The role of patients in shaping digital health outcomes will take center stage in the session titled The Patient Perspective: How Are PROMs Shaping Healthcare. This session will highlight the Patient-Reported Indicator Surveys, or PaRIS, initiative, which collects outcomes and experiences directly from patients with chronic conditions. This session will culminate in an all-patient panel featuring Gözde Susuzlu Briggs of the European Patients’ Forum, OECD health policy analyst Candan Kendir, Graham Prestwich from Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber, and Viktoria Prantauerm, Founder of TheChiefPatientOfficer.

The session From Population to Personal will examine the evolving application of big data analytics in healthcare, and the tensions between collective insights and personal relevance. Dr Isabelle de Zegher, Founder of b!loba and Clinical Coordinator for AIDAVA Horizon Europe, will speak on the increasing need to balance population-level analysis with individual patient needs. The session will also include a panel with Professor Mahmood Adil, Global Clinical Data and Digital Health Lead at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, focusing on how health systems can responsibly and effectively use personal data while navigating ethical and practical questions.

The track concludes with a session titled Connecting the Dots: Digital Twins, Synthetic Data, and the Needed Infrastructure, which explores how new data models can support innovation in AI and decision support. As healthcare organizations struggle with error-prone or incomplete datasets, technologies like digital twins and synthetic data offer promising solutions to simulate real-world clinical scenarios. This session will include insights from Professor Jean-Emmanuel Bibault of the University of Paris, Dr. Sharmini Alagarathnam, Director of Healthcare Research at DNV, Steffen Hess, Head of Health Data Lab at BfArM, and Saila Rinne, Head of Unit "eHealth, Wellbeing and Ageing" at DG CONNECT, European Commission, who will discuss how these technologies are being implemented across Europe.

These sessions will highlight the need for ethical frameworks, patient inclusion and infrastructure to ensure that health data serves both individual and population needs. As European healthcare systems continue to modernize, this track at HIMSS25 Europe offers a crucial space to examine how health data can be leveraged responsibly to build a more equitable future.
