Enhancing Pharmacy Safety with Smart Dispensing and Real Time BI: A Digital Transformation Journey

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH) in Linkou launched a digital transformation initiative to enhance medication safety and efficiency in its pharmacy operations. The hospital processes more than 14,000 prescriptions daily, making dispensing accuracy critical to patient safety.

Through the integration of a smart dispensing system with barcode verification, LED guidance, and real-time business intelligence (BI) dashboards, CGMH created a closed-loop process that detects and prevents errors instantly. The system also enables rapid data analysis, continuous quality monitoring, and proactive staff training.

The results were significant: dispensing error rates dropped by 78% (from 0.023% to 0.005%), detection time fell from two hours to under 30 minutes, and monthly work hours were reduced by nearly 700. This transformation not only improved patient safety and workflow efficiency but also fostered a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
