The Power of Nurses™ in a Digital Era

At HIMSS, May is National Nurses Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the impact nurses have on improving lives and shaping the future of healthcare. In support of the American Nurses Enterprise’s Power of Nurses™ campaign, HIMSS extends this recognition across the entire month, highlighting the growing influence of nursing informatics.

Today, that influence extends far beyond the bedside. Through the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community, nurses are shaping systems, guiding strategy, and advancing innovation across healthcare.

  • Healthcare delivery is being reshaped by nurses through the work happening at HIMSS and the Nursing Informatics Committee. Nursing Informatics fuels innovation through active leadership, engagement, and collaboration to ensure every advancement truly supports the patient journey while ensuring clinicians are working at the top of their license.

Advancing the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community Strategy

The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee, in collaboration with the broader community, is focused on two strategic priorities:

  • AI in Nursing Informatics: advancing practical implementation strategies that enable safe, effective integration into clinical workflows and improve care outcomes
  • Leadership and Strategy: elevating CNIOs as enterprise strategic leaders through workforce policy, and advocacy of inclusion of CNIOs in enterprise decision making and strategy frameworks

This work is designed to produce actionable resources, including toolkits and policy guidance, that help health systems implement innovation in ways that are safe, effective, and grounded in clinical practice.

Nurses across roles are central to this transformation. From executive leaders to frontline staff, their insights ensure that technology supports care delivery, improves outcomes, and reflects real clinical needs.

A Community Driving Impact

The strength of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community lies in its collaboration. Across committees, task forces, and industry partnerships, members are advancing the profession while supporting one another’s growth.

  • To be part of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community is to lead with purpose, translating nursing wisdom into digital strategy, growing our informatics specialty through collaboration and mentorship, and adding measurable value and quality to healthcare by ensuring technology serves clinicians, patients, and equity with intention.

The Future is Powered by Nurses

Nursing informatics continues to be a key driver of healthcare transformation. Through leadership, collaboration, and innovation, nurses are ensuring that digital health advances are meaningful, equitable, and patient centered.

This Nurses Month, HIMSS celebrates the community that is turning nursing insight into action and shaping the future of healthcare.
